Your friend or family member has to give the company your social security number in order for it to be attached to your credit report.

Your friend or family member’s credit cannot be hurt by doing this. All you are doing is having their credit history copied to your account. Just like how people gift down payments, you are simply having them gift you some good credit history. Normally a credit card with your name on it will come in the mail. Make sure this card is cut up or destroyed so that you cannot harm your friend or family member’s credit history.
