CompTIA Training Programs – Thoughts

September 19, 2009 by Jason Kendall

CompTIA A + has a total of four exams and areas of study, but your only requirement is to get certified in 2 to be considered A+ competent. Because of this, many educational establishments restrict their course to just 2 areas. But giving you all four options will provide you with a much wider knowledge and understanding of it all, something you’ll discover is essential in professional employment.

A+ certification by itself will set you up to repair and fix stand alone Macs, computers and laptops; ones which are usually not part of a network – essentially the domestic or small business sector.

Perhaps you see yourself as the kind of individual who is a member of a large organisation – fixing and supporting networks, you’ll need to add CompTIA Network+, or consider an MCSA or MCSE with Microsoft to give you a deeper understanding of the way networks work.

Many training providers still use the rather old-fashioned idea of classroom attendance. Often sold as a benefit, after discussion with someone who has first-hand experience, you’ll most likely hear about many or all of the following problems:

* Repeated travelling – 100′s of miles usually.

* Monday to Friday availability with events can be usual, and with two or three days required at a time, this is usually problematic for a lot of trainees who are working.

* And don’t disregard lost vacation time. We typically get 4 weeks off each year. If half of that is used up on workshops, then we aren’t going to be doing much vacationing.

* Workshops fill up quickly and will likely end up bigger than you’d hoped.

* Maybe you like to work at a slower or quicker pace than the rest of the class. Often this can bring about the tension often found in classrooms.

* A lot of students report that the (not inconsiderable) costs of travelling back and forth to the training school while forking out for food and accommodation can get very high.

* Maintaining the privacy of our training can be very important to most trainees. Why would you want to lose any lift up the ladder, wage increases or achievement in your job because you’re getting trained in a different area. If your employer knows you’ve committed to accreditation in a different industry, what will they think?

* How many of us have avoided putting our hand’s up, because we wanted to look smarter?

* Living away for part of your working week – a fair few students need to live or work away for part of their training. Days in-centre are therefore impossible at that point, but the monies have already been handed over as part of your fees.

It would be better to simply watch and gain knowledge from tutors one-to-one in videoed classes, studying them when it’s convenient for you, not someone else.

Training can take place wherever it suits you. If your PC is a laptop, you could catch some sun in your garden as you learn. Any issues that arise just utilise the 24×7 Support.

Any module can be repeated as often as you want – the more times you cover something – the more you’ll remember. And you can forget taking notes – everything is done for you already.

Basically: You save time, hassle, money and completely avoid killing more trees.

Quite often, students have issues with a single courseware aspect usually not even thought about: How the training is broken down and delivered to your home.

Trainees may consider it sensible (when study may take one to three years to gain full certified status,) for your typical trainer to courier the training stage by stage, as you pass each element. Although:

What if you don’t finish every exam? What if you don’t find their order of learning is ideal for you? Because of nothing that’s your fault, you might take a little longer and therefore not end up with all the modules.

In all honesty, the best solution is to have a copy of their prescribed order of study, but make sure you have all of your learning modules right from the beginning. Meaning you’ve got it all in case you don’t finish within their ideal time-table.

OK, why ought we to be looking at commercial qualifications instead of the usual academic qualifications obtained from the state educational establishments?

Corporate based study (to use industry-speak) is far more effective and specialised. Industry has acknowledged that a specialist skill-set is what’s needed to meet the requirements of an increasingly more technical commercial environment. Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA are the big boys in this field.

Many degrees, for example, become confusing because of too much loosely associated study – and much too wide a syllabus. This prevents a student from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the label’. All an employer has to do is know what they’re looking for, and then advertise for someone with the specific certification. Then they know that anyone who applies can do the necessary work.

Cisco CCNA Computer Training Compared

August 23, 2009 by Jason Kendall

If you want training in Cisco, the chances are you’re looking for a CCNA. The Cisco training is the way to go for those who wish to understand and work with routers and switches. Routers connect computer networks to another collection of computer networks over dedicated lines or the internet.

Jobs that need this knowledge mean the chances are you’ll work for big organisations that are spread out geographically but need their computer networks to talk to each other. On the other hand, you might end up joining an internet service provider. Jobs requiring these skills are plentiful and well remunerated.

Should this be your first introduction to routers, then qualifying up to the CCNA level is all you’ll be able to cope with – don’t be pushed into attempting your CCNP. With a few years experience behind you, you can decide if it’s relevant for you to have this next level up.

It would be wonderful to believe that our careers will remain secure and our work prospects are protected, however, the truth for most jobs throughout England at the moment seems to be that there is no security anymore. Of course, a marketplace with high growth, where there just aren’t enough staff to go round (because of an enormous shortage of commercially certified staff), creates the conditions for lasting job security.

Offering the computer market as an example, a key e-Skills study brought to light a skills deficit throughout the UK of over 26 percent. Essentially, we only have the national capacity to fill just 3 out of each four job positions in the computing industry. This alarming certainty highlights the requirement for more technically accredited IT professionals throughout Great Britain. Without a doubt, now really is the very best time for retraining into the computer industry.

The sometimes daunting task of securing your first IT job can be relieved by training colleges, through a Job Placement Assistance programme. Because of the growing demand for appropriately skilled people in the United Kingdom even when times are hard, it’s not necessary to make too much of this option though. It’s actually not as hard as some people make out to find employment as long as you’re correctly trained and certified.

Whatever you do, don’t wait till you’ve passed your final exams before polishing up your CV. The day you start training, list what you’re working on and get it out there! You might not even have taken your exams when you will be offered your first junior support position; yet this isn’t going to happen if interviewers don’t get sight of your CV. The best services to help you find a job are usually specialised and independent recruitment consultants. Because they make their money when they’ve found you a job, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

A regular aggravation for a number of training course providers is how hard men and women are prepared to study to pass exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the role they have trained for. Don’t falter at the last fence.

OK, why is it better to gain commercial certification instead of more traditional academic qualifications taught at schools, colleges or universities? Industry is of the opinion that for an understanding of the relevant skills, the right accreditation from companies such as CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA often is more effective in the commercial field – at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. University courses, for example, become confusing because of a great deal of loosely associated study – with a syllabus that’s far too wide. Students are then prevented from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

The crux of the matter is this: Authorised IT qualifications tell an employer precisely what skills you have – everything they need to know is in the title: as an example – I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Designing Security for a Windows 2003 Network’. Consequently employers can look at their needs and what certifications are needed for the job.

Authorised exam preparation and simulation materials are a must – and absolutely ought to be offered by your training company. Some students can get thrown by trying to prepare themselves with questions that don’t come from official boards. Often, the phraseology is unfamiliar and it’s important to prepare yourself for this. Mock exams are very useful in helping you build your confidence – so when it comes to taking the proper exam, you will be much more relaxed.

A knowledgeable and specialised advisor (vs a salesperson) will talk through your current situation. There is no other way of establishing your starting level of study. Don’t forget, if you’ve had any relevant qualifications that are related, then it’s not unreasonable to expect to start at a different point than a trainee with no history to speak of. For students starting IT studies and exams from scratch, it’s often a good idea to break yourself in gently, kicking off with a user-skills course first. This can easily be incorporated into any educational course.

CCNA Books – You Need to Know the Difference Between the 2 Types of Books

August 11, 2009 by Jon Teo

There are such a lot of CCNA books to help prepare for the difficult exam these days that it can be hard to choose. These books can be divided into roughly 2 categories – self-study books and exam certification books.

The self study books do not have any pre-requisite networking knowledge and will provide foundation studies for the world of Cisco networks and IT networking. These books are extremely comprehensive and will take a deep look at the concepts which you will be required to know for the CCNA exam. For day to day work in your job as a CCNA networks engineer, this knowledge is also very useful.

The self study books might be too comprehensive, if you already have many years of experience as a network engineer and just need to take the CCNA exam for re-certification purposes. Simply put, the self study books are not meant as a quick reference and are more suitable for the beginning network engineer.

On the other hand, exam certification books are exam focused and match exactly with the objectives set forth by Cisco. They usually do not provide such in-depth detail as compared to the self study books.

If you need coverage of all the CCNA exam objectives, you can be sure that the exam certification books will not disappoint. They are extremely good for you if you are seeking CCNA exam re-certification.

If you are new to the networking world, you might find that the exam certification books do not go into that much detail as required. However, these books are still a very good reference if you are reading CCNA books in combination with taking a CCNA course with a Cisco authorized partner or academy.

My recommendation is that if you have the budget, you should get both kinds of books. You should study first using the CCNA exam self study books to get a deeper understanding of the material before proceeding on to the CCNA exam certification books for a good review of the material before the exam.

Business Conference Call – Three Things You Should Know

August 11, 2009 by Wayne Treps

Are you thinking of making your first business conference call? If its your first time to dabble with the idea, you should not worry. Its easy, affordable and it can benefit your business. Here are a few top facts you should know about it:

#1- It can help improve the way you manage your business.

Every business organization, big or small, require a lot of communication. In almost any transaction or agreement, you would have to meet with employees, associates, clients and investors. A few years ago, this would mean you need to travel in order to attend the meetings. Today, though, attend these make-or-break meetings through conference calls. With just a touch of a button or a click of a mouse, you can gather everyone and anyone instantly. The best part is that you get to save on travel expenses.

Conference calls work even better for business marketers. If you are still on the verge of promoting your business, you can use the power of one conference call to engage potential clients and tell them about your service or product. This is one of the quickest ways to get the word out about what your business is about.

#2- There are many options when it comes to conference calling.

There used to be limits when it came to making a business conference call. What was commonly available before was only the three-way phone which allowed 3 persons, maximum, to talk thru the phone. Today, more and more options are becoming available for companies and businesses who want to reach out to even more people. Traditional phones can now allow more than 12 participants in a conference call. There are even special services can accommodate as many as a hundred or more participants.

Now, there are even more equipments to choose from. While only telephones were used before, now, companies may opt for video conferencing. This allows the participants to see each other while conversing. You can also choose to go for web conferencing. This third option is a top choice because web services typically offer audio, video and file sharing features.

#3- A good conference call company can help you do things quickly and easily.

You dont have to do the hard work on your own. You can always get the services of a company that specializes in managing conference calls. This is an especially good idea if you are launching a campaign that will involve hundreds of participants or continuous conference call schedules. A reputable company can provide operator assistance, customer support, call session management tools and more.

The major decision then is to pick the right conference call company. Since there are so many companies out there vying for your patronage, it can be quite difficult to choose the right one. However, one must not cut corners in carefully selecting their business conference call provider as this third party company could make or break your goals. The surest way to get a good company is to ask for referrals and to research on the recommendations given. A reputable company will always have good feedback both online and offline.

No doubt, a business conference call is one of the best technological innovations that can benefit your business. To get the best out of it though, you have to make the right choices when it comes to choosing call features and a service provider.

When Did Halo 3 Come Out?

August 6, 2009 by Casey Jones

On May 15, 2007 the news was published ” the Halo 3 release date would be September 25 in North America and the 26th in Europe. Halo 3 marked the third in a wildly popular series for the Xbox 360 called Halo. According to the vice president of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business, Halo 3′s release was more than just a video game release, it was the biggest media event of the year. He may just have been right.

The history of Halo 3 really starts with the release of the first game in the series ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’. In November, 2001, when Halo was first published, game consoles were somewhat of a joke for one person shooter games. Yes, some games existed, but they didn’t have the popular communities that the PC games in the genre had.

That all changed with Halo, in which players could battle aliens on foot and in vehicles, in order to complete objectives, while trying to unravel the secret of the Halo. Halo pioneered limiting the amount of weapons a player could carry to two, which in turn, meant forcing the player to make strategic decisions.

People waited for the release of Halo 3 with baited breath. They awaited the continuation of the one-person, shoot-em-up combat format that had been prevalent in the two former parts of Halo. Microsoft calls it the ‘Golden Triangle of Halo’, which consists of gun-type weapons, grenades and others. In actuality, this was not new to one-person, shoot-em-up games, as it had been around since the very first Doom and even the precursor to that game, “Wolfenstein”.

So, with all of that previous history, people were full of anticipation and excitement over the Halo 3 release date. How popular and welcome was the game? Well, before its release, 3.1 million copies were sold in advance orders and retailers thought that that was not enough.

The game took over $300 million gross in the United States in only the first seven days. Overall, it has sold over nine million copies worldwide and was the best-selling video game in the United States in 2007. Even the critics loved it, putting it the seventh highest on the list of Xbox 360 all-time great games.

The Halo 3 release date, like the release date of many widely popular video games was almost like a national holiday like Christmas or Easter. It beggars the question of just what will happen in the realm of video games in the near future?

Symptoms Of A Computer Virus And What To Do To Protect Yourself

August 1, 2009 by Kazu Oda

In a world revolves around cyberspace communications there is bound to be some bad things happen as well as all of the good they do to help people communicate, shop, and work. Those things only scratch the surface to what a computer can do. If your really think about it, almost everything is done by computer these days.

There is a remote that can control your phone service, television service, and your own personal computer service as well. Your car may even run by a computer system. The old ones don’t, but they will be obsolete eventually and no longer used.

Many computers are armed with antivirus software and firewalls to protect them from contracting the many viruses that are floating around in cyberspace. Sometimes, the malicious content disguised as a virus can do some serious damage if it is allowed to get past those protective barriers.

This leaves doors open for someone to invade computers. It is done on a daily basis around the world. A computer virus can be sent to people through email, downloaded programs and software and an arena of many other ways. When a virus is opened in a computer, it can cause all kinds of havoc.

Direct action viruses will start infecting a computer when it is booted up. It gets in the system and replicates itself causing all kinds of mayhem from the root directory of the hard disk. A DDoS, or Directory of Service Virus was unleashed in South Korea and caused all kinds of chaos in which many computers tried to gain access to one particular site and caused it to slow down immensely by overwhelming its server.

That type of virus can be extremely aggravating to the owners of the sites and those trying to use them. A polymorphic virus is extremely hard to get rid of because it is encrypted, which means that it replicates itself, but the antivirus software protection can’t locate it because it changes, or morphs, so its code changes all of the time.

Banking systems, government systems and transportation systems would be primary targets for cyber-terrorists who want to cripple an economy or cause mass confusion which gives them a chance to move in on a target. The beginning of such chaos could begin with something as simple as a virus.

Luckily, there are also people that spend much of their time combating these viruses as they are spread or about to be spread. Hopefully, they will triumph and put an end to the evil viruses.
