The Strange Life Of Poker Legend Stu Ungar

August 11, 2009 by Ross Everett

Too often amazing talents are given to those people who are not able to handle them. Such was the case of poker legend Stu Ungar, who had skills at the card table unrivaled in history. Unfortunately, his ineptitude at every day life and self destructive behavior was equally legendary. Ungar would eventually succumb to his demons, and was found dead in his room at the Oasis Motel in Las Vegas in late 1998.

The only way to accurately describe Ungar’s poker skills is to evoke a sports metaphor–Ungar’s skills at the card table were like those of Michael Jordan or LeBron James on the basketball court. Ungar’s greatest accomplishment was his three World Series of Poker victories, an accomplishment not far removed from Michael Jordan’s six NBA titles. While countless volumes have been written on poker strategy, Ungar’s understanding of the game was almost instinctive. Although he won millions playing poker, the amazing reality was that it was essentially a ‘plan C’ for him as a professional card player. He started as a Gin Rummy prodigy, but quickly ran out of willing opponents in his native New York. He then moved to Nevada, and cleaned out the gin players in the Silver State. He turned to blackjack out of necessity and was almost instantly successful, only to be barred as a card counter at a number of Las Vegas casinos. Needing a new way to earn money as a card player, he took up poker.

The cruel irony of Ungar’s life, however, was that masterful as he was at the poker table he was equally as inept at life beyond the casino walls. He was addicted to drugs for most of his life, and gambled away millions betting on sports and golf (a game he played despite being horrible at it). After his WSOP win in 1997, he was nearly broke and wasted away from drug use by the time the 1998 tournament rolled around. Vegas casino owner Bob Stupak bankrolled him, but as the games began Ungar cowered in his darkened hotel suite at Binion’s unable to pull himself together enough to play.

Other stories of Ungar’s troubled life away from the poker tables evoke the same theme: buying a new Mercedes with cash after a WSOP victory and driving it until it fell apart from lack of maintenance; signing mortgage papers as he played in the Dunes poker room; losing 1.5 million dollars betting on sports or golf in the course of a weekend on more than one occasion.

Tragically, Ungar’s death came as he’d began to show signs of turning his life around. Noted casino owner and longtime friend Bob Stupak had stepped in to help Ungar pay off his debts, clean up his life, and provide the stake money to enter the major poker tournaments. Ungar was found two days after the two had formalized the agreement in a contract. Ungar also left behind an ex-wife and a teenage daughter, who still live in Las Vegas. The official cause of death was listed as “coronary atherosclerosis” and a mixture of drugs including cocaine, methadone and Percodan were found in his system.

Many of the famous gamblers of Las Vegas legend such as Puggy Person and Doyle Brunson have been tough, larger than life individuals with a healthier than normal dose of self-preservation skills. In this respect, Ungar was an anomaly among gambling greats-he was physically frail and almost completely helpless away from the poker table. At the table, however, he became an almost unbeatable adversary. His story is certainly not one that the modern day, publicity conscious Las Vegas will celebrate. He will be remembered, however, as part of the tradition that gives the city its unique character. From the mobsters that pioneered the city, to the Rat Pack that civilized it, to the corporations that cleaned it up, characters like Stu Ungar have provided Las Vegas with its unique character.

The Basics Of Horse Race Handicapping

August 11, 2009 by Ross Everett

Everyone quickly understands the basics of sports gambling, because its as simple as the sports themselves. Horse racing, on the other hand, is a more difficult form of gambling to approach successfully. While there are some similarities between sports gambling and horse handicapping, success in one by no means assures even competency in the other. CBS Sports icon Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder was by all accounts a first rate sports handicapper, but downright awful at forecasting horse races.

The information below is the bare bones basics of what you need to know to enjoy a day at the horse track. If you’re interested in becoming a serious horse handicapper, you’re best advice to start with one of the countless books or DVDs that deal specifically with the discipline.

Reading in Fundamental: The first thing you should do when you arrive at the horse track is to purchase a track program and a copy of the Daily Racing Form. The Daily Racing Form (or DRF for short) is the Wall Street Journal of the horse handicapping set. The track program will offer much of the same information about the specific track, but is frequently in a more user friendly format than the often arcane DRF. The basic stats you’ll find in these publications are the names of the horses, jockeys and trainers, the morning line odds, and the types of bets available for each race. You’ll also have past performance charts, which are the bread and butter of serious horse handicappers. These charts reveal a lot about a horse and what theyve done on the racetrack, including its record, where it ran, the quality of competition it ran against, and what position the horse was in at various points in the race. Most tracks have customer service types that are helpful in clearing up anything you dont understand. While asking the personnel in a sports book who they like isn’t a wise idea, its OK at the track for a reason well now discuss”you’re not playing against them.

The House Doesn’t Care Who Wins: One thing that is important for the sports bettor to remember when playing the horses is that its a parimutuel situation. In other words, you’re not playing against the house, you’re playing against the other bettors. The track just facilitates the betting and acts as a middleman, handling the money for a fee (15 to 25 percent of the parimutuel pool). Another difference is that the track odds are determined by how much money is bet on each horse. If everyone bets on one horse”whether it is the best horse, or just has the catchiest name”it will go off as the favorite. Long odds on a horse doesn’t necessarily indicate a bad horse, but just one that the wagering public isn’t investing in. Sometimes this can be one and the same, but not always.

The odds in the newspaper are known as the ‘morning odds’ and are essentially educated opinions. They’re not much different than ‘overnight lines’ in sports betting. They can serve a function for handicapping, but often will not reflect what will transpire when the actual betting begins.

Handicapping basics: There are so many different approaches to handicapping horse races that its difficult to even know where to start. Some handicappers emphasize past performance data. Others factor in the results of recent workouts, while others prefer a visual examination of the horses in the paddock.

Once a bettor reaches a conclusion about what he thinks will happen in a given race, it is still subject to the odds that are available when betting. This is similar to sports gambling, where an underdog may be more attractive due to an excessively high payback potential than he would ordinary, or, conversely, a clear favorite becomes an unattractive wagering proposition due to a prohibitively high price. Its all a matter of the math”if I could speak to the teenagers of America, Id try to impress upon them the importance of doing well in math for no other reason than its importance in all forms of gambling.

Trainers and breeding: Some handicappers prioritize a horse’s breeding background–considering his bloodlines and the competitive quality of his parents and grandparents. Then training must be considered–a good trainer can often get a horse to ‘over perform’ much in the same way a good coach can get the most out of his team in sports.

The Jockeys: In the simplest terms, jockeys are independent contractors and thus to make money they need to do well. In theory, a jockey wants to get on the best horse possible in each race to maximize his chances of winning. That also results in sort of a chicken and the egg conundrum”are the horses winning because the best jockeys are aboard, or are the best jockeys merely adept at getting on the best horses? Most serious horse players look to the jockey as a secondary consideration. Its sort of a situation where a good jockey cant win with a bad horse, but a bad jockey can cause a good horse not to win.

Don’t Go Overboard, and Try to Find What Works For You: As with any new betting discipline, its always sound advice to not go overboard with the amount of money you wager. These are just the basics of how to bet a horse race and what some of the salient factors are in determining who will win or lose a race, and doesn’t even to begin to scratch the surface of successfully handicapping the sport. If you want to learn more, Id suggest starting with the Daily Racing Form website, after which a simple Google search can expand your options from there.

1977 Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew

August 11, 2009 by Ross Everett

Seattle Slew–the last living Triple Crown winner–died on May 7, 2002 at the age of 28. As one of only 11 Triple Crown winners in history, he is by default one of the greatest horses in the history of thoroughbred racing. Of those 11 legendary animals, Seattle Slew was the only one to complete the Triple Crown with an undefeated record, as well as the only one to have been purchased at a public auction. After retiring in 1978, Slew became one of the most important and successful stud horses in the history of the sport. He sired 1,066 foals including 102 stakes race winners. Among this impressive group of offspring was the 1984 Kentucky Derby winner, Swale. All told, Slew’s offspring have won an amazing $76 million dollars at the race track. Slew’s stud fee of $300,000 made him a very profitable horse even after his racing career was over. Slew wasn’t a particularly attractive horse, but he had the toughness of a championship boxer and the sort of intestinal fortitude and desire that can only be given by The Creator.

The Seattle Slew story began very modestly at a public auction in Lexington, Kentucky. The Keeneland Summer Yearling sale wasn’t supposed to be the marketplace of champions, and the idea that this particular horse would ever amount to anything other than a farmhand was downright laughable. He was somewhat clumsy looking due to a front right forefoot splay and had a shuffling gait at trot. Slew wasn’t a beautifully majestic creature like his Triple Crown winning predecessor, Secretariat. Slew was borderline ugly. So ungainly a creature was he that he was given the less than inspiring nickname “Baby Huey” by the Keeneland staff. He was purchased by two couples (Karen and Mickey Taylor and Jim and Sally Hill) for $17,500. What wasn’t apparent at the yearling sale was the intangibles that make up a championship thoroughbred–poise under pressure, love of competition, toughness, heart and desire. His owners had unwittingly stumbled onto an equine Muhammad Ali, and his competitive fire quickly became apparent to his trainers and jockeys. His first race came at Belmont Park in 1976, and he entered–and won–three races as a two year old giving a glimpse as to what like ahead.

Slew quickly became a horse to watch as a three year old as he won three Derby prep races including the Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled out of the gate. He recovered from the miscue and essentially bulled his way through a pack of horses to lead at the 1/4 mile pole. Slew would win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. He took another tough victory at the Preakness before clinching the Triple Crown with a 4 length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

Slew continued to campaign as a four year old, but in the days before the Breeder’s Cup there weren’t many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in 1978, where he sired champions such as the aforementioned Swale and 1992 Belmont Champ AP Indy. Slew stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky from 1985 until early 2002 when he was moved to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, KY following a spinal operation.

In some ways, Slew had much in common with the heavyweight championship reign of Larry Holmes. He came so quickly on the heels of such incredible excellence–Slew was forever in the shadow of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, Holmes on the heels of Muhammad Ali–that he never gained the appreciation he deserved during his prime. In hindsight, however, it has finally been noted what an exceptional horse he really was. Jockey Angel Cordero, who rode Slew during the twilight of his career noted “If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet.”

Following his death in 2002, Slew was laid to rest at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Kentucky under a statue memorializing his legacy.

Orlando Magic NBA Season Preview

August 11, 2009 by Jason Ritas

There’s nothing like the sense of attachment you feel in being a devout sports fan of any team. While you don’t have a real vested interest like the players and personnel on the team do, you still feel their joy and pain just as they may experience it.

When things are good, you’re on the top of the world with them. When things are worse, you’re legitimately disappointed in them like you would be with a pet or child who just let you down. Regardless, you’re always there for them.

Each and every team is surely different and unique in their own way, and for the Orlando Magic, if you had to summarize their story in one word, it would be “Underdogs.” Taking it back real quick to the beginning of last years playoffs and the Magic headed into the postseason with not many NBA analysts on their side. After surpassing the Sixers, the Magic headed into Boston as the underdogs (even with an injured Kevin Garnett on the sidelines).

Most basketball analysts expected the Celtics to beat the Magic in their second round series; even with the absence of Kevin Garnett. They also saw an easy road to the finals for the Cavaliers once the Magic had beaten the Celtics in seven games. The Magic once again quieted the doubters by amazingly beating Cleveland too. While the Magic played a respectable series against the Lakers, they were once again written off by the medial but things look better than they ever have in Orlando going into next season.

Orlando has seen some great additions to the roster, most notably the acquisition of All-Star Vince Carter. In addition to Carter, the team has built up its arsenal of role players, with the addition of valuable contributors like Matt Barnes, Brandon Bass, and Ryan Anderson. Rashard Lewis, one of the team’s key players, will miss the first ten games of the season due to a failed drug test, but the team is still in a better position than ever before.

Many might see this as a major problem, but all is calm in Orlando. The team will be just fine without him.

As Lewis will miss about 12% of the season right out of the gates, the team will increasingly depend on its newly acquired role players in Lewis’s absence. Its supporting cast, which includes Barnes, Redick, Pietrus, Bass, Anderson, Gortat, and others, will see some extra playing time in Lewis’s absence and should gain quick experience that will be invaluable through the course of the rest of the season.

The fact that the loss of the team’s second most valuable player (and an All-Star) won’t have much of a perceived impact on the team’s performance says it all about the state of Orlando basketball. This should be another one of those up years for the team’s fans.

What Does it Actually Take to Become a Lottery Success

August 11, 2009 by Colin Freezy

Numerous people are interested in how you go about winning lotto; what can you do to increase your odds? What elements have aided previous lotto winners?

In this article I am going to talk about the 10 most efficient techniques when it comes to winning a lottery, what it truly takes to become a lotto winner.

The first secret of success is to sign up to a lottery syndicate and play in the team. Whenever you play in a team, it increases your chances of winning – bottom line – and a syndicate can consist of a couple of participants or maybe several hundred members, receiving their winnings according to their investment.

Whilst syndicates are the best way to go, there are nonetheless people who opt to play alone therefore the other 9 secrets that I am going to talk about are suitable for all types of participants.

My second secret of success is to avoid all the lotto numbers that are under 31. That is not an absolute convention but the payouts for lotto numbers lower than 31 are generally lower for those above it.

My third secret is to use the right numbers. Never think of selecting a number that is personal. It is a popular habit for individuals who don’t play very much. Selecting a large number can be the difference, however, between a profit and a loss.

The fourth and the most important secret to consider, is to do with lotto statistics. Two numbers broadly speaking do not occur that often but they have an average frequent occurrence of forty seven percent. It is very important to interpret how to use lottery statistics to pick your lotto numbers.

My fifth technique is to select three big numbers and three smaller lottery numbers. This has been a very handy method. So Then, your own luck just might place you in the winning zone. The percentage of success for this secret has been around 87% and has generated healthy winners for European lottery winnings.

The sixth secret is that you must get to know as much as you can about lotto’s in general plus the ones you enter in particular.

There are books, videos on YouTube, and blogs which can aid a lotto player in adapting a lot more professional approach towards the gambling game. But as many say, no one can beat experience! The more you enter, the better you get.

My other four techniques have one fundamental trend; my advice is to play sensibly. You may not be able to succeed straight away so, you need to set aside your entry money to cover a couple of months of playing regularly. As you will attain experience and begin to realize results, you can spend more and more money. The elementary fact is the number guess. One has to realize that wheeling systems usually cover winning combinations.

Some lottery players prefer to play by the number analysis. They use lotto numbers that have been profitable recently and believe that these numbers are the most suited ones for winnings. As they choose these numbers more and more, they should also realize a lot of luck. Vibration lotto number prediction has likewise been used by numerous players but that is a complex thing as likened to other methods.

It is likewise preferable to decide a game that has more winning odds. For instance a 3-pick game gives you a luckier chance of winning something than a mega ball.

Altogether, lotto winning is based on luck, and these secrets are only there to assist players to advance their probability of winning.

Learn To Trade the Breakout (Part I)

August 6, 2009 by Ahmad Hassam

A breakout typically occurs when the currency price moves beyond the period of consolidation or range trading. Who doesnt want to reap massive profits from a big price move in a short time? This is what breakout trading can provide you.

A breakout occurs when the price moves above or below a support or resistance level whether temporarily or permanently. There are times when trading the breakout can be very profitable even though breakouts are known to be technically unstable.

You will have to take into account many market factors including both the technical and the fundamental analysis in order to trade breakouts with a higher probability of success.

Both stocks and futures are traded on a centralized exchange. At the end of the day the traders can find out the volume of each security that had been traded during the day. The volume information is easily available for stocks and futures. Information about volume is critical to trading the breakout.

However, volume data is not available for forex markets due to its OTC nature. Being decentralized, this data cannot be collected. Lack of forex volume data is a huge disadvantage to forex traders. Volume reveals where the market is positioned or positioning.

Breakout signals a change in the underlying supply and demand conditions possibly triggered by a change in market sentiments. When the price attempts a breakout of a significant support or resistance level, this change is caused by some new markets fundamentals. Successful breakouts are generally accompanied by a rise in volume. Volume is a very important criterion for any breakout trading strategy.

Price breakouts can be of two types: 1) Continuation Breakouts and 2) Reversal Breakouts. Successful breakouts must be accompanied with a strong surge of momentum in the direction of the breakout in order to be sustainable. Poor momentum will generally lead to the fizzling out of the breakout and continuation of the existing trend.

Continuation Breakout: The price action climbs higher in continuation of an uptrend or falls further lower in a downtrend in a continuation breakout. The breakout occurs after a period of consolidation. The buyers and sellers of the currency pair try to regroup and think about the next price move. Currency prices break out of an established price level to again resume the underlying trend.

Reversal Breakout: Reversal breakout means a new trend in the opposite direction. It is caused by new market fundamentals. A breakout my lead to a trend reversal and the beginning of a new trend in the opposite direction!

The prices may break the support or resistance but then retreat back into the previous price zone. A false breakout can always occur. There are many times when the price action does not move in a straightforward direction in the markets.

If they have placed their stops just above or below the resistance or support levels, stopping out most of the breakout traders! The worst kind of a breakout is the whipsaw type.

Poker Personages : The Locksmith

August 6, 2009 by Yushua Ryoichi

Ally or Foe?

A locksmith is not your ally and also not your foe; they are just there to fill up the table. They are unwilling to get involve to anything that’s why a lot of poker players refer them as locks. They are also one of the simplest players to take down. But be wary of them cause when they only play strong hand and other than that they will fold every time they have a weak one. You cannot get a great deal of money from them. They are just there to fill up the vacant seat and with no other vital reasons.

Aggressiveness and Selectivity

The locksmith only plays a number of hands and its quiet small about 10% of the hands they are dealt with. They are quiet aggressive when they have a very strong hand. So if I were you I will be careful in dealing with a locksmith and will run in the first hint that they are going to raise.

This kind of poker personality is also the most tight player in the game. Once they play they will eventually raise the bet but since they only have a small number of hands to play they are utterly passive. Obviously, this passivity can be attributed to their fear of someone having a better hand than they have. They are also commonly willing to start the bet but hesitant to re-raise except if they have the best hand in the game.

In Hold ‘Em , the locksmith will only play in a range of ATs+, AJo+, 88+. And will not turnover anything lower than that.

Predictability

Locksmiths are usually easy to predict. They only have a few playable hands resulting in erasing any kind of deception in their list. Since they are super tight their passive play is sort of a contradicting trait that will eventually play them down.

Poker IQ

You will encounter a lot of locksmiths in your poker career. Each of them have different kind of Poker IQ. Some of them play tight and doesn’t bother to make changes in their game. But a number of locksmith knew a lot about poker and are open to make changes in their play to suit their opponents.

What You Should Do

The very first thing you should is to play without bothering to face the locksmith. But if you face them in the near future then it is advisable to play passively against them and desert all kind of passable deceptive drinks.

Locksmith are known to give many free cards in the game. Grab this free cards and try to build a better hand in the process.
