Casual Decor Offers Simplicity, Texture & Comfort

Many people might think that casual decor is one that has no theme or organization. Nothing could be further from the truth!
You can tell casual decor by the simplicity, the texture in the fabrics, soft upholstery and the asymmetrical pattern that is magnificantly accented. Soft curves or rectangles seem to be the elements of this style. But you can find the focal point in this decor is comfort. You can use casual decor to easily blend in with other themes like French Country, Shabby Chic or cottage, or even American.
Start from the floor up in fashioning a casual decor. Flooring suitable for casual style includes hardwood, stained concrete, tile, or stone. Use sisal, berber or other Transitional style area rugs as focal points. Don’t use anything too plush.
Furniture should be oversized, soft and comfortable, often using slipcovers. Neutral colors such as beige, gray, tan or off-white predominate in casual style. However, other colors such as pastels or jewel tones such as cranberry, navy, olive green or rust can be used for more excitement in the style.
When it comes to decor you may want to choose textured fabrics like upholstered furniture and pillows that have natural fibers.
In terms of scale, this style focuses on elements that are large, long horizontals. Chunky tables add to a restful, spacious feeling while offering storage space. Casual also welcomes the addition of wicker and rattan items, finds from the flea market and antiques. One of the essentials for a casual living room setting is a large ottoman that can double as a coffee table with the addition of a large tray.
When arranging the room, use a large area rug as a focal point, but don’t set the furniture in a formal design. This home decor style emphasizes easy variety, so sharp angles and matched pieces are a no-no. Think complementary; not perfect match.
If your floor or furniture is wood you want to use oak or pine as this is the most popular types of wood in the casual decor. Use wrought iron, hammered iron, antique brass, porcelain, or carved wood.
Window treatments echo the uncluttered, whimsical touches. Start with blinds or shades topped with valances. Use non-traditional wood or iron as drapery hardware, such as old pipes or tree branches as curtain rods. Tiebacks for drapery panels can be long nails or notched twigs; anything similar to enhance the casual feeling.
The windows are not the only spot you can use a rustic look. The light fixtures can be done in wrought iron, pewter, wood, or even tin. These materials look great on lamps and chandeliers. You may want to be adventurous and use a pan rack or a set of antlers for your chandelier.
Collections also play a role in Casual style. Pillows, old books, hatboxes, luggage or even birdhouses serve to add that whimsical touch essential to Casual style. It’s even possible to add a collection of area rugs, in any appropriate style, to the decor with rugs of various sizes – even hung on a wall as an art work.
When the casual decor is complete you should have a room that allows company and family to feel warm. The look should be very hospitable, homey, and comfortable. The textured fabrics, the overstuffed long furniture, or rustic accessories as well as the rugged surfaces can be a great look when brought together.

Are you ready to incorporate the “WOW” factor into your new dream home? Whether it’s your dream home or an existing home that needs a design makeover, your first step is to hire an Interior Designer.
Why is it necessary to consider hiring a professional Interior Designer? Simply, because most of us do not have the expertise or lack the skill that it takes to decorate and design. You could end up spending more money on costly mistakes.
Leave it to a skilled and trained designer to bring your design dreams to fruition. Let their expertise open an endless world of possibilities when it comes to space planning, color, art, style and so much more.
So hiring the right Interior Designer is your next step. So how do you go about that? You should absolutely feel that your designer represents you to the best of their knowledge. How? They know how to listen to you as you share your desires and goals.
I have found as a practicing Interior Designer for over twenty years, that this seems to be where the problem lies in most cases. Clients have shared with me that some designers don’t know how to listen.
I suggest that you interview two or three designers before you hire one. It is a well known fact that you can talk to ten designers and get ten different design concepts. But your goal here is to hire the one you feel most comfortable with.
You’ll notice many personality types but I’m sure you’ll find one that you feel is on the “same page” as you. You should feel comfortable in the fact that your designer listens to your desires and goals.
Listen to your designer as well. They will share their design background and projects they have completed that will help you in your selection. Although you’ll want to know how years they have been practicing, the real importance lies in their confidence and professionalism.
Besides being very valuable in their skills and expertise, Interior Designers also come equipped with the knowledge of the best vendors in the industry. They know who to go to as well as who “not” to go to. Could you trust your decision?

Have you got an aptitude for interior design? Are you always rearranging your room, or telling your friends and family where to put that piece of pottery they bought yesterday? Then, the best place you could be to utilise your skills is one of the many interior design colleges or design schools that are around these days.
With help and encouragement from your friends and family, you could find yourself well on your way to establishing your own interior designing firm. Then you’d be where everyone wants to be, ie doing a job that they really enjoy doing. So, just what are interior design colleges and what can you expect them to offer you?
Well, to start with, the number of interior design colleges that you will come across in your search will be large and, at times, even confusing. If you do a search on the Internet or even just ring up the colleges and ask for a catalogue of courses, you can then take an well-informed decision about which of the interior design colleges you would like to study at.
If your life is too hectic these days, but you still want to fit in a course or two, you have the option of studying at any of the Internet interior design colleges that seem so numerous these days. Or perhaps you could even try a night course or correspondence course in your pursuit of interior design knowledge.
All of these interior design colleges teach basically the same things and will enhance your own natural abilities. You’ll learn everything from scratch and will be given an insight into why certain colours match well next to each other and why other colours don’t.
You’ll learn when to use the rules that you’ve been taught and when to break them. But above all, you’ll be taught how to use your natural design abilities with the knowledge that you’ve garnered at the college and blend it into a mixture that is greatly stunning to the eye.
Moreover, if interior design colleges are what you’re looking for, then you can be assured of coming away with a lot more than only the knowledge of how to place which colour next to another colour to get a pleasing effect. By studying at least a few courses, or even by doing the whole range of courses offered to you, you’ll be multiplying your natural interior design abilities at least a hundred fold.
It is quite unique having a confidence boost to increase up your own innate skills and to be able to tell someone with absolute confidence that you are a real, bona fide interior designer.

Goth is a popular theme for the more individualistic teens. If you have a teenager who is itching to transform his room into a Goth paradise, be armed with these decorating tips in order to better help your teen achieve his dream bedroom.
Incorporating elements from the more traditional gothic style may include architectural modifications and layered accessories. But don’t go overboard and have a room of absolute depression and horror. Take into account that the rest of the family, who may not be Goth-inclined, will visit the room as well. Try to make it as welcoming as possible for everyone.
First, know how dark you intend to go with your colors. Whenever we think about Goth, the first thing that comes to mind is black. For your walls, you may instead opt for deep red or purple with a black accent. Alternatively, use the stone block style which is reminiscent of medieval castles, along with your deep red or purple. You may have three of the walls in deep purple or violet, and then apply faux stones onto the fourth wall. Or for a less permanent solution, simply dip a large square sponge into gray paint and create the semblance of bricks on your wall. To complete the brick wall effect, use a plain brush to add darker and lighter tones. Or simply settle for wallpaper with a brick wall print.
For her bedroom floor, consider black stained wood which would greatly complement the rest of the Gothic furniture and accessories. If you already have wall to wall carpeting, place an area rug on top of your carpet. A shag area rug in black or deep purple placed in front of the bed will do wonders for a gothic-themed room.
The bed will also look more suitable to the Goth look with wrought iron or wood frame, further enhanced with velvet drapery. Intricate details either in the wood material or the fabrics are ideal for this design. Go for bed linens that are also dark in color and embroidered, preferably in velvet.
Decorating with items is a creative work. By visiting salvage stores or thrift shops, you’ll see many items fitting for a Goth bedroom. There are the vampire artworks and props, coffins, skulls, crucifixes and wrought iron or rustic iron-made pieces. A gargoyle above the door, a faux iron lamp by the bedside and dark images as artworks are Goth perfect decors.
Remember not to make the modifications to her room too permanent because your Goth teen is likely to grow out of the whole gothic phase eventually. Ensure that when the time comes, you should be able to change back without incurring too much cost.

Mixing and matching items is not just for different colors, shapes or sizes. His and hers count too. A shared abode means the presence of his stuff and her stuff. Making these things work can be done, don’t worry.
Couples should adjust not only to one’s quirks and peeves but also to how one lives and wellhow one decorates their “territory” at home. How sad it would be to see a house with an almost visible line that separates his stuff from hers. On the right sidethe masculine! On the left sidethe feminine!
On the other hand, how impressive it is to find a home that blends both elements gracefully or brusquely, whichever point of view you’re coming from. Compromising the home decors to achieve a look that is neither his alone or hers alone, but one that seamlessly puts together both his and hers is perfect – unisex items, neutral colors, accents and combinations. An area rug for example with a neutral color beats a rug that is girly pink or red, or manly green or brown in compromising.
The truth is that you should never underestimate just how powerful color can be. When you blend in his and her colors, you are definitely going to be replenishing the room. For instance, having brown walls with neutral his/her backdrops is perfect. You could have a black chest (for him) and a white chair that creates that relaxing look (for her).
What works is balance, the yin and yang. A white table with floral carving may be balanced out with a wrought iron candleholder or an industrial lampshade. The black and white photos on the walls can be coordinated with some scented colorful candles on the tables.
Furniture pieces don’t have to correspond to his and hers exclusively. Neutral colors will do. Even a black leather couch won’t have to look too masculine with bright-colored throws as accessories.

It is important you consider the message you want to convey when choosing office furniture for your new business. In an office atmosphere, you need a distinct image to present to your clients. The various styles invoke different moods; ensure they match your plan.
Using contemporary office furniture is ideal if you want to create a look that is modern and open. The clean lines suggest activity and forward thinking and create a clean open look. Traditional furniture has heavier lines and designs that are best suited for legal offices or businesses tending to serious issues. Modern office furniture utilizes glass and smooth metal accessories that generate a crisp and functional look. It makes sense to take some time and look into the different styles available and choose one that expresses your goals.
Home office furniture is different in the sense that you are unlikely to be hosting clients at your home. Here your main goal is to match current furnishings or finding something that offers a great deal of flexibility at a good price. Home offices often serve multiple purposes, so coordination may need to play a larger role. Home office furniture also tends to be smaller in order to fit in the tighter spaces found in a home.
It is essential to measure before furnishing any kind of office. You can’t pick out a unit until you know if it will actually fit. A sleek looking filing cabinet you find may not fit in the space you intended.
Buying online is usually cheaper, but it is recommended that you spend some time in a good office store trying things out. Some chairs look great but may not fit your proportions or fit under the table you are considering. Once you have made your choices, go online and comparison shop for the best deals.

When we think of the Southwest most of us think of desert, cactus and wide open space. When we decorate for Southwestern flavor, it is the colors of the Southwest that become important. The colors of nature abound in the Southwest. Blending into nature’s palette are the colors and design associated with the Native Americans indigenous to this area.
Before you assault the task of redoing your living room to a Southwestern motif, you need to decide what colors you would like to employ. Do you want neutral colored walls the color of the desert sands or would you prefer the rich hue of turquoise? The traditional decorator colors for the Southwest are shades of yellow, orange, red and green. It is easy to see the colors of the vibrant sunrise and sunset seen over the desert landscape in the colors of the Southwest. Even in the midst of the desert plants thrive. Green is the color of life in the desert. So, as you can see, the four main colors are highly significant to the Southwest and important for inclusion in your Southwest decor.
The Southwest design is laidback and comfortable. Big furniture pieces come as no surprise. If you prefer a neutral color for your wall paint, you can go bright with the furniture and accessories like the throw pillows and drapes.
Similarly, balance is applicable for a room that is painted a vivid color by choosing decorations with a more subtle hue. Wood is an ideal material to use for furnishings, particularly dark wood for that Southwestern feel.
Decorating with authentic Southwestern accessories is the best way to enhance the theme. You don’t have to look too far with area rugs around. There are Southwestern area rugs that were weaved, some by hand, by Native Americans. The designs and patterns were mostly handed down from one generation to the next. A large Native American rug will look amazing as a room’s centerpiece.
Native American rugs are truly a piece of art. You will surely be completing your home decorating plan with these decors. The designs of horses, buffalo, Kokopelli, tribes and other images telling of the Native Americans’ heritage and culture are surefire conversation starters. The wool and cotton materials too are a heaven sent for tired feet.
There is no more comfortable, welcoming living room that one with a Southwest flavor.

You can win some brownie points with your teen in the home decorating department with your knowledge of the Goth world.
Implementing a Gothic style may mean including some interior changes and a couple of accessories to design the room. No need to overdo though. With key items, your teen’s bedroom can have the realistic look of a Gothic architecture.
Decide on the darkness of color. Black is synonymous to Goth but this color may be too much or too expected. Why not try other dark tones like red or purple, and then accent it with some black to remain true to the Gothic look? Gothic architecture can also be applied as a visual aid on the walls. Paint images of stone block medieval castles or a semblance of bricks. To do the latter, use a large square sponge with a gray paint then add some dark and light tones for a layered effect.
The floor will also benefit from a dark-colored area rug. You can use multiple rugs if the room is big or if not, one large rug in front of the bed will do.
The bed will also look more suitable to the Goth look with wrought iron or wood frame, further enhanced with velvet drapery. Intricate details either in the wood material or the fabrics are ideal for this design. Go for bed linens that are also dark in color and embroidered, preferably in velvet.

Did you know that you can add style to your home with even a few pieces of distinctive antique furniture? There are numerous questions to answer and things to consider before you buy that special period antique. How many? How much? What style? Where will you put it? Why do you want it? How do you even know if it is an antique? If an article of furniture is more than 100 years old and still has use and value, it is an antique.
No matter why you want to get antique furniture, it helps if you learn something about the basics. So what color furniture do you like? What style? How was it made? What kind of wood do you like? I like oak for a lot of things but really love maple bedroom furniture. These queries and more will help you decide whether the furniture you are thinking about needs to really be an antique or if it can be a reproduction or not. If it has not been changed significantly it may indeed be authentic and worth the cost.
Go to an auction or estate sale, with your hands in your pockets and your checkbook at home! Just observe the action and examine the quality of the antiques that surface there. You will be amazed what you can learn. Visit antique stores and museums, Talk to curators. Gather information and learn what types of antique furniture you like. Or you can read about antiques online or in the library.
Reputable antique dealers honor standard practices established by LAPADA. Ask and be certain you know if your dealer is a part of LAPADA (the Association of Art & Antiques Dealers). Antique dealers really enjoy sharing their knowledge and are often very helpful in teaching you a lot about their passion. These are some ways you can gain the confidence to buy that authentic Antique Furniture.
Your authentic antique furniture should show the normal effects of aging. If an antique has been kept well and cared for properly these authentic antique furniture pieces will look best in their original condition. An antique without flaws is an oxymoron. It is not a worthy antique. It has probably been completely refurbished to look perfect for the unwitting buyer. Dealers know the condition of an antique affects its value. Dealers also know the originality of antiques is what make them valuable. So be alert.
When each item of furniture is handcrafted, each one is unique. Historically each chair was made one at a time. They reflect the skill and talent of the craftsman or artisan. That is a measure of creativity and an expression of beauty. You see, when we make furniture today it is mass produced and it is the same everywhere we go. Antique furniture reminds us of the comfort and beauty that are found in originality and creativity.
Because they have been hand made by individual artisans true antiques rarely show exact symmetry. Small imperfections and details reveal that the antique has been hand made not machine cut. That is a part of the beauty and value of these pieces. For instance the spindles or rungs on a chair are likely to be just a little less than identical.
Bringing antique furniture into our homes and offices is certainly a thoughtful way to remember and honor generations that have preceded us. The best way to recreate the time period when it was made is by purchasing some authentic pieces and using them in your home or office. The unique traits of antique furniture are a part of why there is an increased interest in collecting them today.Everyone wants to be unique. Their value can only increase and you can enjoy doing research on the time period when it was made.
